802.1X
- 802.1X is an IEEE Standard for Port-based Network Access Control (PNAC)
- It provides an authentication mechanism to devices wishing to attach to a LAN or WLAN
- It's used to limit network access for clients until they authenticate, and has three main actors
- Supplicant
- Client requesting access
- Sends credentials to authenticator
- Authenticator
- Device that provides access to the server
- Authenticator forwards credentials to Authentication server
- Authentication server
- Verifies credentials and instructs Authenticator what kind of access is allowed
