802.1X

  1. 802.1X is an IEEE Standard for Port-based Network Access Control (PNAC)
    1. It provides an authentication mechanism to devices wishing to attach to a LAN or WLAN
  2. It's used to limit network access for clients until they authenticate, and has three main actors
    1. Supplicant
      1. Client requesting access
      2. Sends credentials to authenticator
    2. Authenticator
      1. Device that provides access to the server
      2. Authenticator forwards credentials to Authentication server
    3. Authentication server
      1. Verifies credentials and instructs Authenticator what kind of access is allowed
